I had been swimming for over forty years...badly, until I started learning how to swim properly using the Shaw Method.
Over the years I had became a professional splasher using a very unorthodox approach which I seem to have picked up without any difficulty! So after a number of fellow swimmers got frustrated with my splashing, I finally investigated the Shaw Method.
Initially I found it very difficult to "crack it", but after transferring my lessons to Peter Brierley, I finally made a breakthrough in a relatively short time! He is very patient, sensitive and conscientious in his approach as an exceptionally kind, courteous and professional Shaw Method Swimming Teacher. I particularly appreciated his additional key insights he brought to the lessons as an Alexander teacher which he uses to enhance his lessons.
As I approach the age of fifty, I am a reasonably fit individual who is aware of age catching up - with health becoming more of an issue...and so I am well aware of the advantages of a low impact exercise to carry me through to and beyond the third age! Swimming can naturally aid one's advanced years, and so I feel very grateful to Peter for teaching me at this stage so that I can enhance my life in the years to come.
I wish every new student of Peter's all the very best - having him as your teacher is a great step forward in your learning to swim naturally using the Shaw Method and enhancing your life - good luck...go for it!

When I go to the pool now and see all those people swimming breaststroke with their head up, I want to tell them “go and have a Shaw Method lesson and learn how to swim properly!”
After a few lessons with Barbara, I have completely changed my attitude to swimming and my behaviour in the pool. I no longer spend my whole session swimming up and down the lanes, head held high; I now have fun! Floating, gliding, doing handstands and somersaults or simply lying still in the water – I mix these in with all my strokes – and that now includes basic dolphin-like moves to prepare me for learning Butterfly.
I always wear goggles now so that I can have my face in the water and feel my style is becoming more streamlined, relaxed and effective. And I no longer have neck ache after 20 lengths.
I recently saw a seal gliding beautifully and was convinced it knew the Shaw Method! If you like swimming, this can change your life!

I have problems with the right side and upper parts of my body, in particular my neck and shoulder. By the time I began Alexander Technique lessons with Peter I had tried many other things including Pilates based physiotherapy, Yoga and Chiropractor but was experiencing increasing problems with pain, mobility and severe headaches. The Alexander Technique has helped me enormously. What has surprised me the most is just how quickly I began to see an improvement and how easy it has been to integrate the principles into everyday life so that they soon became second-nature.
Choosing a teacher is a very personal thing and a lot of the work is very hands-on. I believe that Peter has the ability to relate to a wide variety of people and I have appreciated his patience, understanding and professionalism.

For the past 4 months I have attended Peter's one-to-one lessons regularly. It has not only given me an insight into how I should be controlling and moving myself but also about how natural actions and postures become corrupted with time and age. Hence, the Alexander Technique has given me the confidence to apply inhibition to my own response to stimuli and I am now starting to think before I act. I would thoroughly recommend the Alexander Technique to anyone especially those with stressful lifestyles.
