Alexander Technique

The Alexander Technique a simple and practical method of self help that may allow the body to return to a natural state of poise and balance, regaining greater ease and freedom of movement. Poor postural habits can start in childhood through poor chairs, copying elders or by developing undesirable habits ie. slumping, rounded shoulders, stiff necks etc. Also modern stressful living can result in our bodies holding on to far too much muscular tension. In later life we see some people ‘pulled down’ and shrinking in height. The human body is a wonderful machine designed to be kept in balance but if we habitually distort our skeletal frame and musculature this will usually cause health problems such as RSI, back pain, neck pain, high blood pressure, arthritis, breathing difficulties and may reduce our general quality of life.

Peter Brierley MSTAT has undertaken a 3-year Alexander Technique teacher training course and is a member of the Society of Teachers of the Alexander Technique. Contact 07921 912 726 email: peter@swimwise.co.uk.

Frederick Matthias Alexander

The technique was discovered by an Australian F.M. Alexander 1869-1955 and has been taught in the UK for over 100 years. In an Alexander Technique lesson the teacher will guide you using a hands-on procedure to release tension and will work with you as an individual to allow you to bring about change in your posture to allow you to integrate what you have learnt into your everyday life.
